Week 3

This week I started doing the character and set design. I watched loads of videos of behind the scenes for stop motion films. I watched all the LAIKA archive videos on YouTube to understand the process that their films went through. I started the main character design of the son and mother using my brother and mum as references. I did some super quick charcoal sketches and my brother from younger photos of him and did some pen sketches of my mum. I then picked out some of their features I wanted to keep in and played around with proportions and expressions. During my designs I realised that practically they wouldn’t really translate well onto my puppets as the eyes didn’t have eyelids to hold in the socket and ball eyes I needed to make. So trying to keep elements of the designs I did before I made two final turnarounds of the mother and son. I didn’t do turnarounds of the other characters as I didn’t have time, I also changed how they looked originally from the storyboard to the physical character as I wanted to represent a more multicultural and realistic society in my animation. I used a mixture of pens, graphite, photography and Procreate to make the character designs. The set designs were done quite quickly due to the fact I have booked in for the following week to build it.
